Lawyer Author/Lecturer Teacher Background Specialties Principles Contact HOME | The Law is Society's On-Going Quest for Integrity in Interpersonal Affairs The quest is "on-going" because each generation respects the views of its predecessors - this is called respect for "precedent". It is on-going also because new situations always arise, and so the quest can never be viewed as completed. It is a quest for integrity because a satisfying resolution of any legal problem has to respect our most deeply held feelings and convictions: satisfying us intellectually is never enough. Justice is a pathway towards spiritual growth, and law is nothing but the art of Justice. To seek justice, either as a litigant, a lawyer, or a judge, is to grow spiritually. Law is a set of procedures, styles of thought, and principles which people need in order to find justice. It can be thought of as Justice's "secret art": it can be studied but never merely memorized and while it is famously amenable to manipulation by low-spirited people, it can be truly understood only by those who yearn for justice. |
